nature reserve in the Saudi Arabian desert. It has been a dry winter, with virtually no rain since the previous spring. The hoopoe larks are quiet this year. Occasionally a male whistles his song and dances vertically up and down in the air – about 5 metres up, then, after a somersault , back to the ground or the bush that he started from. In some years, every territory contains a dancing male. In the flat desert landscape you can see them from afar and hear them everywhere. Early April 2000.After two days of sandstorms that built up our expectations, the rains are a disappointment. The rain gauges that are spread throughout the reserve and the puddles in the tyre tracks tell us that some hoopoe lark territories have received up to 10 millimetres, others next to nothing. We imagine a pair of hoopoe larks in a dry territory watching the rain come down a few kilometres away; should they move over there and try to supplant the territory owners? Whether they should or not, they don't. We have never observed hoopoe larks moving to areas where the grass is greener; instead they wait till next year. For hoopoe larks in the Arabian Desert rain is an important cue that appears to have both short-and long-term consequences, depending on its timing. The patchy and limited rainfall of April 2000 triggered a short-term response in lark pairs living in the territories that actually did receive rain: males started displaying enthusiastically, while females dug nest cups and began gathering sticks. But after a few days, before nest construction was completed, the urge had passed. Apparently rain acted as a cue to start breeding behaviour but whatever the next 154 19 C h a p t e r To breed or not to breed: that is the question IRENE TIELEMAN AND JOE WILLIAMS Decisions facing hoopoe larks in the Arabian desert In temperate areas, we tend to take it for granted that birds have an annual cycle that includes a breeding season each spring. Temperate zone passerines predictably produce one or more clutches of eggs every year. But hoopoe larks and other small desert birds will sometimes skip a breeding season. This seems a major decision in the life of a small bird, especially considering the short life span of small animals. How can we get insights into the decision-making processes of desert breeding birds? …

Critical Drag Investigation for an Axisymmetric Projectile with Choked Base Bleed at High-Subsonic and Transonic Regime Using SST K-? Model

In the following paper, the effects of a choked jet exhausted from the base of a non-lifting body on its total and base drags at sub-sonic and transonic regimes has been numerically investigated. Having surveyed the results of some turbulence models and after comparing with experimental results, an appropriate turbulence model i.e. SST K-?, has been chosen and this model has been used in the su...

Role of Human Factor in Energy Conservation: Case of Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant

Humans are an integral part of power plants, ranging from construction to routine maintenance. Analysis of the presence and performance of the human factor can play an effective role in reducing and/or optimizing the use of energy resources. Therefore, in this research the investigation of the plant operator's presence direction in order to control a type of accident with the implementation of ...

Gastrointestinal bleeding rates among managed care patients newly started on cox-2 inhibitors or nonselective NSAIDs.

OBJECTIVE While cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors were introduced to the U.S. market with the promise of less gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity than nonselective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), additional research is needed to examine this outcome in the naturalistic setting. The objective of this study was to examine whether use of COX-2 inhibitors is associated with reduced risk...

External validation of the IMPROVE Bleeding Risk Assessment Model in medical patients.

The IMPROVE Bleed Risk Assessment Model (RAM) remains the only bleed RAM in hospitalised medical patients using 11 clinical and laboratory factors. The aim of our study was to externally validate the IMPROVE Bleed RAM. A retrospective chart review was conducted between October 1, 2012 and July 31, 2014. We applied the point scoring system to compute risk scores for each patient in the validatio...

Effect of feed and bleed rate on hybridoma cells in an acoustic perfusion bioreactor: part I. Cell density, viability, and cell-cycle distribution.

For the development of optimal perfusion processes the effect of the feed and bleed rate on cell growth in a perfusion bioreactor was studied. The viable-cell density, viability, growth, death, and lysis rate and cell-cycle distribution of a hybridoma cell line producing an IgG1 were studied over a range of specific feed and bleed rates. It was found that the feed and bleed rates applied in the...
